Renowned for its wariness, the brown trout is a European and western Asian salmonid so cautious that large individuals turn nocturnal and shift to hunting smaller fish. Golden-brown flanks scattered with haloed black and orange-red spots distinguish it, while sea-run fish take on a silvery sheen. Native from Iceland and the British Isles through Scandinavia, the Alps, and the Caucasus, it favours clear, cool rivers and lakes over gravel and rock. Introduced across the globe, it has become a defining challenge for fly fishers wherever it swims. It reaches 1.4 metres, and its firm, cream-to-pink flesh is richer than that of rainbow trout, while the species is assessed as Least Concern.

Coloration
Flancos dorado-marrones a ámbar salpicados de grandes manchas negras y rojo-anaranjadas, cada una a menudo rodeada de un halo pálido; el vientre es dorado amarillento; la aleta adiposa tiene un tinte anaranjado; la forma que migra al mar es plateada.
Habitat & Distribution
Ríos, arroyos y lagos de toda Europa, el oeste de Asia y el norte de África; ampliamente introducida. Habita ríos claros, de fríos a templados (8-18 °C) sobre grava y roca. Existen poblaciones anádromas que migran al mar.
Distribución Geográfica
Nativa de Europa y el oeste de Asia, desde Islandia y las islas Británicas hacia el este a través de Escandinavia, los Alpes y el Cáucaso. Las truchas marinas anádromas migran entre las aguas costeras del Atlántico y los ríos de agua dulce.
