The largest member of the perch family, the walleye takes its name from large, glassy eyes backed by a reflective tapetum that grants exceptional low-light vision. Golden-olive with dark saddle blotches and a white-tipped lower tail lobe, it reaches about 107 centimetres in the clear, deep lakes and large rivers of North America east of the Rockies. Its keen night vision makes dawn and dusk prime feeding times, when it hunts over sand and gravel. Widely regarded as one of the finest freshwater food fishes on the continent, it offers sweet, flaky, very lean white flesh, classically pan-fried. Popular and widespread, the species is assessed as Least Concern.

Coloration

Habitat & Distribution
Lagos y ríos de agua dulce de Norteamérica al este de las Rocosas, desde Canadá hasta Tennessee. Habita lagos claros y profundos y grandes ríos sobre arena y grava, a profundidades de 3-15 m. Migra a los afluentes para desovar en primavera.
Distribución Geográfica
Nativo de Canadá y el norte de Estados Unidos, incluyendo la cuenca de los Grandes Lagos y grandes sistemas fluviales como los ríos Misuri y Ohio. Introducido en todo el oeste de Estados Unidos; tolera de forma marginal condiciones salobres de baja salinidad.
