Pier and Jetty Fishing

Location, rigs, and common species

## Location Strategy

Piers extend into deeper water, giving shore-bound anglers access to species they could not reach from the beach. The end of the pier reaches the deepest water and often the best fishing. Pilings create structure that attracts baitfish and predators.

## Rigs and Methods

Sabiki rigs catch live bait (pilchards, herring) to use as bait for larger species. A Carolina rig with live or cut bait works well near bottom. For pelagic species, cast metal jigs or plug lures and retrieve fast.

## Common Species

Piers produce a wide variety: mackerel, pompano, sheepshead, flounder, and occasionally cobia and tarpon. At night, lights attract bait and in turn predators like snook and tarpon. Always check pier regulations — some require permits and many prohibit certain methods.
