The spiny dogfish is one of the most abundant shark species worldwide. Named for the venomous spine in front of each dorsal fin, it has the longest known gestation period of any vertebrate at nearly two years.

Coloration
Gray to brownish-gray back with a row of small white spots along each side that fade with age; belly pale white to cream; countershaded with a clear pale margin along the pectoral and pelvic fins.

Cosmopolitan in cold to temperate shelf waters of the North Atlantic, North Pacific, Mediterranean, and Black Sea. Congregates in large schools on continental shelf and slope from intertidal to 900 m depth.
