Acerca de
Clarias batrachus, the walking catfish, belongs to the family Clariidae and is native to Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and surrounding regions. It is capable of surviving brief overland journeys between water bodies using its pectoral fins, aided by a labyrinth-like accessory breathing organ that allows it to breathe atmospheric oxygen — a remarkable adaptation that gave rise to its common name. This species inhabits freshwater and brackish environments including ponds, swamps, slow-moving rivers, and rice paddies, tolerating low-oxygen and stagnant conditions. It reaches a maximum recorded length of approximately 47 cm and a maximum weight of around 1.19 kg. C. batrachus is widely consumed as a food fish throughout its native range and in parts of the world where it has been introduced, including Florida, where it is established as an invasive species. The flesh is firm and mild-flavored, and it is commonly farmed in aquaculture systems across Southeast Asia. Mercury levels are generally considered low in this species given its predominantly invertivorous and omnivorous diet. The albino form is a pigmentation variant produced in aquaculture. Wild populations face pressure from habitat loss and overfishing in some parts of its range, though it remains broadly distributed.
