Acerca de

The Alaska Ling Cod, described scientifically as Ophiodon elongatus, is a saltwater fish belonging to the family Hexagrammidae, the greenlings. It is not a true cod but rather the sole member of its genus, reaching a maximum recorded length of approximately 152 cm and a maximum weight of around 59.11 kg. It inhabits neritic coastal environments at depths ranging from 0 to 475 metres, typically associated with rocky reefs, kelp forests, and complex hard-bottom substrates along the Pacific coast of North America from Alaska to Baja California. Lingcod is an apex predator within its reef ecosystem, feeding voraciously on rockfish, flatfish, octopus, squid, and other available prey. Ophiodon elongatus is a prized game fish, highly sought by sport anglers throughout its range for both its fighting ability and exceptional table quality. Standard angling methods include jigging with large swimbaits, whole bait rigs, and bottom fishing near rock piles and reef edges. Its flesh is notable for an unusual blue-green hue prior to cooking, which disappears entirely with heat to reveal firm white fillets. Lingcod are also commercially important on the West Coast of North America. Males guard the large egg masses deposited by females in winter, an unusual parental behavior among teleosts. Details of geographic range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature beyond its known eastern North Pacific distribution.
