The production of light by living organisms through chemical reactions. Deep-sea fish use bioluminescence for attracting prey, communication, and camouflage via counterillumination.

Bioluminescence in fish is produced by the oxidation of luciferin by the enzyme luciferase, generating cold blue-green light with near-100% efficiency. Over 75% of deep-sea fish species produce bioluminescence. Anglerfish lure prey with bacterial bioluminescence in the esca (females only). Counterillumination — producing ventral bioluminescence to match downwelling surface light — is used by lanternfish and hatchetfish to eliminate their shadow and become invisible to predators below. Flashlight fish (Anomalopidae) have symbiotic bioluminescent bacterial organs that can be occluded with a shutter for communication and predator avoidance.
