Kefal (Mugil cephalus) is a euryhaline fish of the family Mugilidae (Mullets), in the order Mugiliformes. Maximum recorded length is 100 cm, with a maximum published weight of 8 kg. Its recorded depth range is 0–120 m. Recorded habitats include neritic, coral reefs, estuaries. The IUCN Red List assesses the species as Least Concern.

The flathead mullet is one of the most widespread coastal fish, found in tropical and temperate waters worldwide. It is an important baitfish and food fish, and its dried, salted roe (bottarga) is a Mediterranean and East Asian delicacy.

Coloration
Blue-gray to olive back with silvery flanks showing dark streaks following the scale rows; belly white to silvery; each scale often has a dark center; fins are pale to dusky; blunt flattened head.

Cosmopolitan in tropical, subtropical, and temperate coastal and estuarine waters of all major oceans from 42°N to 42°S. Enters rivers, lagoons, and brackish tidal creeks; migrates offshore to spawn in warm months.
