Alaskan sculpin

The Alaskan Sculpin is a saltwater fish classified within the family Cottidae, a large and diverse family of primarily benthic, cold-water fishes. Described scientifically as <em>Triglops metopias</em>, specific maximum size data for this species are not extensively documented in available records. It inhabits marine shelf environments at depths ranging from 27 to 132 metres, occupying the inner to mid-continental shelf in cold North Pacific waters. Sculpins of the genus Triglops are slender, elongated cottids adapted to life on soft substrates, in contrast to the more robust, rocky-reef dwelling members of the family. They are sometimes referred to as ribbed sculpins due to the lateral line modifications or skin ridges that characterize certain species in the genus. <em>Triglops metopias</em> is a cold-water specialist native to subarctic and boreal North Pacific environments, where it forages along muddy or sandy seafloor habitats for small invertebrates, crustaceans, and worms. Cottids generally lack a swim bladder and are negatively buoyant, relying on their pectoral fins and benthic lifestyle to remain in contact with the substrate.
