Dense white to pale spotting over a blackish-grey to dark olive body gives Acanthicus adonis a polka-dotted appearance extending onto the fins, offset by a pale belly and large odontode spines on the pectoral fins. The armoured catfish is native to the Tocantins drainage in the Brazilian state of Pará, in the eastern Amazon basin, where it clings by its suctorial mouth to rock in swift lowland rivers and grazes algae and biofilm from wood and stone. Clean, well-oxygenated water suits it. Not taken for food, it is kept in large aquariums for its markings, within the family Loricariidae, order Siluriformes.
