A small, peaceful armoured catfish of the Rio de la Plata system in Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina, the peppered corydoras works the substrate with sensitive barbels, sifting sand and mud for food. Pale olive-gray with dark marbled blotches and bony body plates, it reaches about seven centimetres and, like others in its family, can gulp atmospheric air at the surface to survive oxygen-poor water. A gregarious bottom-dweller, it fares best in groups of six or more and serves as a diligent substrate scavenger in community aquaria. Undemanding and adaptable in tanks of around 40 litres between 22 and 26 degrees Celsius, the species is assessed as Least Concern.

Coloration
Cuerpo gris oliva pálido a verdoso con manchas y motas irregulares jaspeadas de oliva oscuro a negro; una amplia mancha oscura en la base de la aleta dorsal; el vientre es de color crema a blanco; las aletas están moteadas o barradas.

Ríos y arroyos de la cuenca del Río de la Plata en Sudamérica (Brasil, Argentina, Uruguay). Habita arroyos de aguas claras sobre fondos arenosos y fangosos. Habitante activo de fondo; presente en zonas con vegetación.
Distribución Geográfica
Nativo del sistema del río de la Plata y de ríos costeros del sureste de Brasil, Uruguay y el noreste de Argentina. Habita arroyos someros, praderas inundadas y lagunas de fondo arenoso en la Sudamérica subtropical.
Conservation Status
Corydoras is classified as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
