Acerca de
Careproctus albescens is a deep-sea snailfish belonging to the family Liparidae, a diverse group of scorpaeniform fishes found predominantly in cold, high-latitude, and deep-water marine environments. This saltwater species has been recorded at depths ranging from approximately 600 to 1,460 metres, placing it firmly in the mesopelagic to bathypelagic zones where light is absent and hydrostatic pressure is extreme. It attains a maximum recorded length of about 23 cm. Details of habitat and range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature, which is typical for deep-sea liparids given the challenges of sampling at such depths. Liparidae are characterised by soft, gelatinous bodies adapted to withstand the crushing pressures of the deep ocean, and they often lack swim bladders. Members of the genus Careproctus are broadly distributed across cold oceanic regions, including the North Pacific, North Atlantic, and Antarctic waters. Their diet typically consists of invertebrates such as amphipods and other small crustaceans. Deep-sea species like C. albescens are rarely encountered by the public and are of primary interest to marine biologists and deep-sea taxonomists. Their conservation status is not formally evaluated, partly because population data from the deep sea remain exceptionally sparse.
