Acerca de
The Alambari is a freshwater fish classified within the family Characidae, one of the most species-rich fish families in the Neotropical region. Known scientifically as Psalidodon paranae, this characid typically attains a maximum length of approximately 16.4 cm. Characids of the genus Psalidodon (formerly placed in Astyanax) are among the most ecologically versatile and widely distributed freshwater fishes in South America. Psalidodon paranae is native to the Paraná River drainage of southeastern South America, where it inhabits a variety of lotic and lentic freshwater environments ranging from fast-flowing streams to larger river channels and associated floodplain lakes. This species is omnivorous, consuming aquatic and terrestrial insects, plant material, algae, and small invertebrates. Characids of this group often form large schools, and their abundance makes them important prey items for larger predatory fish and birds within their native ecosystems. Details of habitat and range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature beyond its documented association with the Paraná basin. The species contributes to nutrient cycling and energy flow in Neotropical freshwater food webs, and its widespread occurrence has made it a model organism in studies of freshwater fish ecology in South America.
