Freshwater Community Fish

Compatible species, stocking levels, and feeding

## Choosing Compatible Fish

A successful community tank combines species with similar temperature and pH requirements, compatible temperaments, and different swimming levels. Classic combinations: neon tetras (mid-water), corydoras catfish (bottom), and guppies or platies (top/mid).

Avoid mixing aggressive cichlids with peaceful community fish. Research each species' adult size — many fish sold as juveniles grow much larger.

## Stocking Levels

The old rule of '1 inch of fish per gallon' is a rough guideline at best. Consider each species' bio-load, activity level, and territorial needs. Understocking is always safer than overstocking. A good filter rated for twice your tank volume helps maintain water quality.

## Feeding Basics

Feed once or twice daily, only as much as fish consume in 2-3 minutes. Vary the diet: high-quality flakes or pellets as a staple, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and blanched vegetables for herbivores.
