التعريف
Harvesting fish at a rate that maintains healthy population levels and ecosystem balance for future generations. Certification programs like MSC verify sustainable practices.
شرح مفصّل
Sustainable fishing requires harvesting below maximum sustainable yield (MSY) — the theoretical point at which the greatest harvest can be taken without reducing future productivity. In practice, MSY calculations involve significant uncertainty, and ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM) increasingly considers broader trophic effects rather than single-species models. The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) blue label certifies fisheries meeting standards for sustainable stock levels, minimal ecosystem impact, and effective management. About 15% of global marine catch is MSC-certified. Subsistence fisheries and small-scale artisanal fisheries (which employ 90% of fishers worldwide) present different management challenges than industrial fleets.
