Biofilter

定义

A filtration component that houses colonies of beneficial bacteria to process ammonia and nitrite through the nitrogen cycle. Sponge filters and ceramic media are common biofilters.

详细说明

Biofiltration capacity is determined by the surface area and oxygen availability of the filter media. Ceramic rings, porous sintered glass (Siporax), and plastic biomedia (K1, Matrix) provide thousands of square centimeters of colonizable surface per liter. Sponge filters are particularly valued for fry and shrimp tanks — the gentle flow prevents injury and the sponge surface hosts copious bacteria. HOB (hang-on-back) and canister filters add mechanical and chemical filtration ahead of the biofilter media, extending cleaning intervals. Never rinse biofilter media in tap water (chlorine kills bacteria); always rinse in discarded tank water. Established biofilter media can cycle a new aquarium in days when seeded into it.
