<em>Lethrinops albus</em> is a freshwater cichlid belonging to the family Cichlidae, one of the most species-rich families of vertebrates in the world. The genus <em>Lethrinops</em> is endemic to the East African Rift Valley lakes, with most species found in Lake Malawi, one of the African Great Lakes renowned for its extraordinary cichlid diversity and high degree of endemism. <em>Lethrinops albus</em> is a moderately sized cichlid, reaching a maximum recorded length of approximately 19.5 cm. Members of the genus <em>Lethrinops</em> are generally benthic or near-benthic feeders, sifting sandy lake substrates for invertebrates, organic detritus, and small organisms. They are typically slender-bodied fish with a moderately sized head and mouth adapted for picking prey from soft sediment. This species inhabits freshwater environments, specifically the lake systems of the East African Rift where Lethrinops species occur. Details of habitat and range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature beyond its known East African freshwater affinities. Its conservation status has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN. Lake Malawi and other East African Great Lakes face threats from overfishing, sedimentation, and eutrophication, which affect cichlid communities broadly.
