Alaska blackfish

The Alaska Blackfish is a freshwater fish belonging to the family Umbridae, a small family of pike-like fishes found in cold northern wetlands. Described scientifically as <em>Dallia pectoralis</em>, this species reaches a maximum recorded length of approximately 33 cm and a maximum weight of around 0.37 kg. It is native to subarctic Alaska and adjacent Siberian regions, where it inhabits cold, shallow lakes, ponds, bogs, and slow-moving tundra streams with abundant aquatic vegetation. The Alaska Blackfish is renowned for its extraordinary cold tolerance, surviving in water that approaches freezing and reportedly enduring brief exposure to sub-zero temperatures. Its heavily vascularized pectoral fins suggest some capacity for aerial respiration, and the species is known to breathe atmospheric air during periods of low dissolved oxygen. This adaptation is critical for survival in the stagnant, oxygen-depleted waters that characterize frozen subarctic wetlands in winter. <em>Dallia pectoralis</em> is a carnivore, feeding on aquatic invertebrates, small crustaceans, and occasionally smaller fish. It is an important subsistence food source for indigenous communities in western Alaska and has long been used as dog food in traditional practices. Details of habitat and range beyond its known subarctic distribution remain limited in the ichthyological literature.
