简介
The Alabama cavefish, Speoplatyrhinus poulsoni, is one of the rarest and most imperilled freshwater fishes in the world, belonging to the family Amblyopsidae — the cavefish family. It is known exclusively from a single location: the groundwater pools of Key Cave in Lauderdale County, northwestern Alabama, USA. Adults are typically very small, reaching a maximum recorded length of approximately 7.2 cm. As an obligate cave-dweller, Speoplatyrhinus poulsoni exhibits extreme troglobitic adaptations, including complete loss of functional eyes, greatly reduced pigmentation, and highly sensitive mechanoreceptors along the lateral line and head that detect water movements in the dark subterranean environment. The species feeds primarily on invertebrates, particularly amphipods and isopods associated with cave ecosystems that depend on organic input from the surface. The entire known population of the Alabama cavefish is confined to a habitat area of just a few hundred square metres, making it extraordinarily vulnerable to any disturbance, contaminant input, or hydrological change affecting Key Cave. Speoplatyrhinus poulsoni is listed as Critically Endangered and has been a subject of dedicated conservation concern for decades. It is the sole member of its genus, making it of unique evolutionary and ichthyological significance.
