简介
The Nezumia africana is a saltwater fish belonging to the family Macrouridae, the rattails or grenadiers — a diverse and ecologically significant family of deep-sea fishes distributed across the world's oceans. Adults of this species attain a maximum recorded length of approximately 24.2 cm, and it has been documented at depths reaching approximately 732 metres. Rattails are characterised by their distinctive body shape — a robust head tapering to a long, thin tail — and are among the most commonly encountered fishes in deep trawl surveys globally. Nezumia africana, as indicated by its species epithet, is associated with African oceanic shelf and slope environments, likely distributed along the eastern Atlantic coast near the African continent. Details of habitat and range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature. Members of the genus Nezumia are typically benthopelagic, hovering just above the seafloor and feeding on invertebrates, organic detritus, and small fishes. Rattails often produce sounds using specialised drumming muscles associated with the swimbladder, which may play a role in communication and reproduction. As a slope-dwelling species, Nezumia africana inhabits a zone increasingly affected by deep-sea trawling fisheries.
