Commercially the most significant croaker of the tropical western Atlantic, Cynoscion acoupa reaches 110 cm and 17 kg. It moves freely between salt and fresh water, occupying estuaries, shallow coastal waters between about 1 and 20 metres, and the lower reaches of rivers along the South American coast. The species belongs to the drum family Sciaenidae in the order Perciformes, and is taken by both commercial fisheries and sport anglers.
