A gas-filled internal organ that allows bony fish to control their buoyancy and maintain depth without expending energy swimming.

The swim bladder (or gas bladder) typically contains a mixture of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. Physostomous fish (like eels and salmon) have a duct connecting the swim bladder to the esophagus, allowing gas exchange by gulping or venting. Physoclistous fish (like perch) are sealed and adjust gas volume via a gas gland (secreting gas through countercurrent blood vessels) and an oval (absorbing gas). Rapid ascent can cause fatal overexpansion; deep-water fish brought quickly to the surface exhibit bladder protrusion through the mouth.
