Định nghĩa
A fish that hunts by remaining motionless and striking rapidly when prey comes within range. Species like pike, stonefish, and anglerfish are classic ambush predators.
Giải thích chi tiết
Ambush predators invest in morphological specializations: cryptic coloration and texture (stonefish, frogfish), ability to hold position without movement (flatfish, lizardfish), wide gape relative to body size (pike, largemouth bass), and extremely rapid strike mechanics. The strike of a pike (Esox lucius) takes as little as 20 milliseconds from lunge initiation to prey contact — faster than most prey's escape response. Anglerfish lure prey with a bioluminescent esca, effectively bringing food to the predator rather than the reverse. Energy budgets favor ambush predation in patchy, low-productivity environments.
