<em>Mastacembelus alboguttatus</em> is an elongate freshwater spiny eel belonging to the family Mastacembelidae. Native to river systems in Central or West Africa, depending on the specific distribution of this taxon, members of the genus <em>Mastacembelus</em> typically inhabit slow-moving to moderately flowing rivers and streams with soft substrates such as sand or mud, where they burrow to conceal themselves during the day and emerge at night to feed. This species reaches a maximum recorded length of approximately 49 cm, making it a medium-to-large representative of the family. Details of habitat and range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature. Spiny eels in the genus <em>Mastacembelus</em> have become popular in the specialised aquarium trade due to their unusual body form and interesting nocturnal behaviour. A tank housing <em>M. alboguttatus</em> should feature a soft sand or fine-gravel substrate into which the fish can burrow, with ample hiding places such as caves, PVC pipes, and driftwood. Water should be warm (24–28 °C), well-filtered but not excessively turbulent. They feed on earthworms, bloodworms, and other meaty foods.
