Akysis longifilis

<em>Akysis longifilis</em> is a freshwater torrent catfish of the family Akysidae, native to flowing stream habitats of South or Southeast Asia. The species is somewhat larger than several of its congeners within the genus <em>Akysis</em>, typically attaining a maximum recorded length of approximately 5.31 cm. Its relatively elongated form, as the specific epithet may suggest, sets it apart from the most diminutive members of the genus. Like other akysid catfishes, <em>Akysis longifilis</em> is believed to be a benthic species strongly associated with fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams where rocky and gravelly substrates predominate. The flattened ventral profile, stout spines of the dorsal and pectoral fins, and tuberculate skin typical of the genus are adaptations that facilitate stability and grip in rheophilic environments. Dietary habits are thought to consist primarily of small aquatic invertebrates, benthic microorganisms, and organic detritus. Details of habitat and range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature. Akysidae species are frequently restricted to individual river drainages or sub-basins, making them inherently susceptible to localised environmental pressures. <em>Akysis longifilis</em> has not been evaluated for conservation status, and further taxonomic and ecological study is needed to fully characterise this species.
