Loricariids are distributed predominantly across tropical and subtropical South America, inhabiting rivers, streams, and flooded areas with a range of substrate types. <em>Paraloricaria agastor</em> likely occupies flowing freshwater environments with sandy or gravelly riverbeds, where its flattened, armoured body form and sucker mouth allow it to resist current and graze on substrate-attached food.
