Marcusenius abadii

<em>Marcusenius abadii</em> is a freshwater fish belonging to the family Mormyridae, commonly known as the elephantfishes or weakly electric fishes of Africa. This moderately sized species can reach a maximum length of approximately 40 cm and a maximum weight of around 0.5 kg. Mormyridae is a large and ecologically diverse family endemic to sub-Saharan Africa, distinguished by the capacity of its members to generate and perceive weak electric fields for communication, navigation, and prey detection — a biological phenomenon known as electrolocation. <em>Marcusenius abadii</em> inhabits freshwater river systems across its African range, typically favoring slow to moderately flowing waters with soft substrates and ample cover in the form of submerged vegetation, roots, or woody debris. Like other mormyrids, it is primarily nocturnal, becoming most active after dark when it uses its electric organ to probe the substrate for invertebrates, insect larvae, and other small prey items.
