Essential Fishing Gear

Rods, reels, line, and tackle box basics

## Rods and Reels

A medium-power spinning rod and reel combo is the most versatile starter setup. Spinning reels are forgiving for beginners — open the bail, cast, and close it. Baitcasting reels offer more precision but have a steeper learning curve.

## Fishing Line

Monofilament is the most beginner-friendly line: it stretches, floats, and is inexpensive. Fluorocarbon is nearly invisible underwater, making it ideal for leader material. Braided line has zero stretch and extreme sensitivity but requires careful knot tying.

## Terminal Tackle

Hooks, sinkers, and swivels connect your line to the fish. Circle hooks improve catch-and-release survival because they hook in the corner of the mouth. Split-shot sinkers add weight without complex rigging.

## Tackle Box Essentials

Start with: assorted hooks (sizes 4-1/0), split-shot sinkers, bobbers, a few soft plastic baits, two or three crankbaits, needle-nose pliers, line clippers, and a stringer or landing net.
