Mastacembelus albomaculatus

<em>Mastacembelus albomaculatus</em> is a freshwater spiny eel belonging to the family Mastacembelidae. Like others in the genus, it inhabits river and stream systems in sub-Saharan Africa, favouring slow to moderately flowing waters with soft sandy or muddy substrates that allow the fish to burrow. It reaches a maximum recorded length of approximately 22 cm, making it a moderately sized species within the family. Details of habitat and range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature. Spiny eels are increasingly popular among aquarists who appreciate their sinuous body form, cryptic behaviour, and the challenge of replicating their specialized habitat needs. An aquarium for <em>M. albomaculatus</em> should include a deep, soft sand substrate into which the fish can bury itself completely, along with several caves, tangles of driftwood, and PVC shelters to provide daytime retreats. Lighting should be subdued or on a timer to encourage natural nocturnal activity cycles. Water should be warm (24–28 °C) and well-filtered. Feeding primarily on meaty foods — earthworms, bloodworms, prawns, and small invertebrates — is recommended.
