Akysis variegatus

<em>Akysis variegatus</em>, sometimes called the variegated stream catfish, is a freshwater species of the family Akysidae native to stream systems of South or Southeast Asia. It is one of the larger species within the genus <em>Akysis</em>, typically reaching a maximum recorded length of approximately 4.3 cm. The specific epithet <em>variegatus</em> — meaning variegated or mottled — likely refers to a distinctive colour pattern consisting of irregular pale and dark patches or blotches, a pattern common in benthic fishes that provides camouflage against heterogeneous rocky substrates. Like other members of the genus, <em>Akysis variegatus</em> is associated with fast-flowing, well-oxygenated hill streams and river tributaries, where its flattened body profile, fin spines, and tuberculate skin allow it to grip the streambed against strong current. The species is thought to forage on small benthic invertebrates, periphytic algae, and organic detritus, using its barbels to locate food items close to the substrate surface.
