The genus <em>Mogurnda</em> is distributed across New Guinea, northern Australia, and associated Pacific islands, typically inhabiting shallow, clear freshwater streams and rivers with rocky or gravelly substrates in lowland and montane settings. <em>Mogurnda aiwasoensis</em> is named for Aiwaso, reflecting its likely association with a specific locality in Papua New Guinea or the surrounding region — an area of extraordinarily high freshwater fish diversity and endemism.
