A massive armored catfish (up to 80cm) from large Amazonian rivers, covered in hyacinth-patterned bony plates with long spines on the body and fins. Algae-scraping specialist on submerged logs and rocks.

Coloration
Dark brown to near-black large Amazonian pleco with a dense covering of white to yellowish spots on the dorsal surface that become sparser with age; heavily armored with large hypertrophied odontodes; pale belly.
Habitat & Distribution
Main channels of large Amazonian rivers and floodplain lakes, especially the Rio Tocantins and Rio Araguaia. Inhabits areas with submerged logs and rocky substrate over sandy and rocky river bottoms.

Found in the upper and middle Amazon River basin of Brazil and Peru, including the Xingu, Tocantins, and lower Tapajós river drainages. Inhabits clear, fast-flowing rivers with rocky substrates in lowland and foothill Amazonia.
