The fin located on the back of a fish that provides stability and prevents rolling. Some species have multiple dorsal fins or modified spiny rays.

Perch-like fish (Perciformes) typically have two dorsal fins: a first with sharp spiny rays and a second with soft rays. Spiny rays are defensive structures — the first dorsal fin can be locked erect when threatened, making the fish difficult to swallow. Anglerfish have modified the first dorsal spine (the illicium) into a bioluminescent lure (esca) used to attract prey. In some flatfish the dorsal fin extends from head to tail. Dorsal fin structure — spine and ray counts — is a primary taxonomic character for species identification.
