Alaska cod

The Alaska Cod is a saltwater fish belonging to the family Gadidae and is scientifically described as <em>Gadus macrocephalus</em>. This species reaches a maximum recorded length of approximately 119 cm and a maximum weight of around 22.7 kg, making it one of the largest gadids in the North Pacific. It inhabits marine waters at depths ranging from 10 to 1,280 metres, with greatest abundance over continental shelves and upper slopes. Alaska Cod are demersal, feeding on a wide variety of prey including fish, squid, crabs, shrimp, and polychaete worms. They are cold-water specialists, thriving in the subarctic and temperate North Pacific and Bering Sea. <em>Gadus macrocephalus</em> is a prized game fish throughout its range, sought by sport anglers fishing the coastal waters of Alaska, British Columbia, and the Pacific Northwest. Bottom fishing with jigs, bait rigs, and heavy tackle is standard practice, with anglers targeting rocky reefs, pinnacles, and soft-bottom areas where cod congregate. The species is also commercially significant, contributing substantially to North Pacific fisheries. Its firm, white flesh is highly regarded for its mild flavor and flaky texture, making Alaska Cod a staple in seafood markets and restaurants. Details of habitat and range beyond its known North Pacific distribution remain limited in the ichthyological literature.
