<em>Telmatherina abendanoni</em> is a small freshwater fish classified within the family Telmatherinidae, the Celebes rainbowfishes, a family endemic to the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. This species typically reaches a maximum length of approximately 6.8 cm. Telmatherinidae is a relatively small family confined to the freshwater lakes and rivers of Sulawesi, with several species associated specifically with the ancient and biogeographically unique Malili lake system, which includes Lakes Matano, Mahalona, Towuti, and their connecting waterways. These lakes are notable for their great age, exceptional water clarity, and high levels of endemic biodiversity, including numerous fish species found nowhere else on Earth. <em>Telmatherina abendanoni</em> inhabits freshwater systems within this region, favoring clear, well-oxygenated waters that are characteristically warm and moderately alkaline due to the ultramafic geology of the Malili system. Males of many telmatherinid species display vivid yellow, orange, or iridescent coloration, making them popular among aquarium enthusiasts with an interest in rare and endemic fishes. <em>Telmatherina abendanoni</em> is occasionally kept in specialized aquaria, where it typically thrives in a well-planted tank with stable, warm, moderately hard water and tankmates of compatible size and temperament.
