Alepidomus evermanni

<em>Alepidomus evermanni</em> is a diminutive freshwater silverside of the family Atherinidae, reaching a maximum recorded length of approximately 3.3 cm—making it one of the smaller species in this largely small-bodied family. The atherinids, or silversides, are slender, schooling fishes typically found in coastal marine, estuarine, and freshwater habitats across tropical and subtropical regions. <em>Alepidomus</em> is a small genus within the family, and <em>A. evermanni</em> is named in honor of Barton Warren Evermann, the American ichthyologist who made substantial contributions to the taxonomy of North and Central American freshwater fishes. Its very small adult size suggests adaptation to calm or sheltered freshwater microhabitats such as lake margins, slow-moving backwaters, or vegetated shallows where food particles and planktonic organisms are abundant. Details of habitat and range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature. Its conservation status has not been formally evaluated. Like many small-bodied, range-restricted freshwater fishes, <em>A. evermanni</em> may be sensitive to habitat disturbance and water quality changes in its native freshwater systems.
