Acromycter alcocki

<em>Acromycter alcocki</em> is a deep-sea saltwater eel belonging to the family Congridae, the conger eels. Reaching approximately 25.3 cm in length, this species inhabits oceanic depths ranging from roughly 388 to 640 meters, placing it firmly in the mesopelagic to upper bathypelagic zone where light is absent and pressure is substantial. Congrid eels in this depth range are typically elongate, with well-developed lateral line systems and chemosensory adaptations suited to detecting prey and conspecifics in the perpetual darkness of the deep ocean. <em>Acromycter</em> is a relatively small, specialized genus within the conger eels. Details of habitat and range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature. Like most deep-sea congrid eels, <em>A. alcocki</em> is likely a carnivore feeding on small invertebrates and fishes. It has not been evaluated under IUCN criteria. The species is named in honor of the naturalist and ichthyologist Sir Alfred William Alcock, whose work on deep-sea fauna from the Indian Ocean was foundational to the description of many abyssal species.
