概要
Akysis vespa, commonly known as the wasp catfish, is a small freshwater catfish of the family Akysidae found in stream systems of South or Southeast Asia. The common name "wasp catfish" alludes to its strikingly banded or spotted colouration, which in some lighting resembles the warning coloration of stinging insects and may function as a form of aposematic mimicry or disruptive camouflage in rocky stream habitats. Adults typically reach a maximum recorded length of approximately 3.14 cm. Like other Akysis species, Akysis vespa is a benthic fish strongly adapted to rheophilic conditions, inhabiting fast-flowing, rocky-bottomed streams and hill rivers where high current velocity and dissolved oxygen levels characterise the environment. Its flattened body profile, stout spines on the pectoral and dorsal fins, and highly textured skin facilitate anchorage on and movement across coarse substrate. The diet is believed to consist of small aquatic invertebrates, benthic microorganisms, and organic detritus. Details of habitat and range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature. This species has attracted interest among aquarists due to its distinctive markings, though it is not commonly kept in captivity. Akysis vespa has not been formally evaluated for conservation status.
