Definisi
The velocity at which a boat moves while pulling lures or baited lines through the water. Optimal speed varies by target species and lure type, typically 1.5 to 10 knots.
Penjelasan Terperinci
Trolling speed is the primary variable controlling lure depth, action, and the species targeted. Planer boards and downriggers are used to fish lures at precise depths while trolling. Slow trolling at 1.5–3 knots with live bait (flatlines) targets bottom species like walleye. Medium trolling at 5–7 knots targets pelagic species like wahoo, mahi-mahi, and striped marlin with diving plugs and rigged ballyhoo. High-speed trolling at 8–12 knots with skip baits and skirted lures targets fast species like wahoo and tuna. GPS speed-over-ground display has replaced boat-speed estimation, allowing precise speed control critical to replicating successful trolling patterns.
