An apex freshwater predator of the Northern Hemisphere, the northern pike has an elongated body, a broad duck-bill snout, and rows of razor-sharp teeth. Dark olive-green with irregular cream, bean-shaped spots, it reaches 1.5 metres and holds a nearly circumpolar range across North America, Europe, and northern Asia, even entering brackish Baltic bays. It hunts from ambush among weed beds, launching explosive bursts of speed at passing fish. Its lean, mildly earthy white flesh is well regarded but laced with Y-shaped pin bones that demand careful filleting, and it is often used in fish cakes.
