A feeding strategy where fish strain suspended food particles from water using gill rakers or specialized mouth structures. Whale sharks and manta rays are notable filter feeders.

Fish filter feeders exploit the most abundant biomass in the ocean — zooplankton and phytoplankton. Gill raker spacing determines the minimum particle size retained: whale sharks have fine meshes retaining particles as small as 1 mm. Three mechanisms operate: ram filter feeding (continuous forward swimming with open mouth), suction feeding (active water pumping), and cross-flow filtration (where mucus concentrates particles laterally). Basking sharks filter up to 1,800 cubic meters of water per hour. Filter-feeding fish are among the largest: whale shark, basking shark, giant manta, and megamouth shark all exceed 5 meters.
