Caudal Fin

परिभाषा

The tail fin of a fish, the primary source of propulsion. Its shape indicates swimming style: forked for speed, rounded for maneuverability.

विस्तृत व्याख्या

Caudal fin shapes include homocercal (symmetrical externally, most bony fish), heterocercal (upper lobe larger, sharks), and diphycercal (fully symmetrical internally and externally, lungfish). High-aspect-ratio lunate (crescent-shaped) tails in tunas and marlins minimize drag and maximize thrust efficiency for sustained high-speed cruising. Broad, rounded tails in ambush predators like pike enable powerful but brief accelerations. The oscillating caudal peduncle and fin generate thrust through the carangiform or thunniform swimming modes.
