A large seabass (up to 60cm) from Argentine and Chilean Patagonian waters. Mottled brownish with strong jaws; inhabits rocky shallow reefs. Locally important food and sport fish in South America.

Coloration
Pale brownish to reddish-brown body with several irregular dark brown vertical bars on the flanks fading toward the belly; Patagonian species with a mottled barred pattern; fins brownish with pale spotting.
Habitat & Distribution
Rocky coastal reefs and kelp beds of the Patagonian Atlantic (Argentina and Uruguay) and Chilean Pacific coast, at 5-50m depth. Temperate South Atlantic marine environment.

Temperate southwestern Atlantic from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil south through Uruguay and Argentina to Patagonia and the Falkland Islands. Inhabits rocky subtidal reefs and kelp beds in cool-water South American shelf habitats.
