Overview
Nicknamed the king of the aquarium, the discus is a disc-shaped cichlid of warm Amazon blackwaters, especially where the Rio Negro meets the Rio Solimoes. Vivid turquoise lines wave across a reddish-brown body, and wild forms show nine dark vertical bars. It demands soft, highly acidic water between roughly 26 and 31 degrees Celsius with driftwood and little current, making it a challenging aquarium subject. Parents secrete a nutrient-rich mucus from the skin on which their newly hatched fry graze, an unusual form of parental care. Reaching about 20 centimetres, it needs a deep tank of at least 250 litres, and the wild species is assessed as Least Concern.
परिचय
The discus is often called the 'King of the Aquarium' for its disc-shaped body and stunning color patterns. Native to the Amazon floodplains, it requires warm, soft, acidic water and feeds its fry with a mucus secretion from its skin.
