Alawan snowtrout

The Alawan snowtrout, <em>Schizothorax richardsonii</em>, is a freshwater cyprinid belonging to the large family Cyprinidae. Native to the Himalayan and sub-Himalayan river systems of South Asia, this species is adapted to cold, fast-flowing mountain streams and rivers with clear, well-oxygenated water. Adults can reach lengths of up to approximately 60 cm. Snowtrouts of the genus <em>Schizothorax</em> are characterised by a row of enlarged scales along the lateral line and a subterminal mouth suited for grazing on periphyton, algae, and benthic invertebrates in torrential habitats. <em>Schizothorax richardsonii</em> is a valued game fish, supporting both subsistence and recreational angling in its native range. It also holds cultural and economic significance in local communities across Nepal, northern India, and adjacent regions. Details of habitat and range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature beyond its general Himalayan distribution. Conservation status is not formally evaluated at this time.
