परिचय
The Alaska Halibut, known scientifically as Hippoglossus stenolepis, is a saltwater flatfish belonging to the family Pleuronectidae. It is the largest of the Pacific flatfishes, reaching a maximum recorded length of approximately 258 cm and a maximum weight of around 363 kg. This massive species inhabits continental shelf and slope environments at depths ranging from 0 to 1,200 metres, with adults often found at greater depths while juveniles occur in shallower coastal waters. Alaska Halibut are highly regarded as game fish throughout their North Pacific range, drawing legions of charter and sport anglers to the waters of Alaska, British Columbia, and the Pacific Northwest. Targeting these fish typically involves deep bottom fishing using heavy conventional tackle, large circle hooks, and bait such as herring, octopus, or salmon bellies deployed near the seafloor over sandy or muddy flats. Trophy specimens exceeding 100 kg are occasionally landed, and the world record individuals represent extraordinary catches in Alaskan waters. Hippoglossus stenolepis is also among the most commercially important fish in the North Pacific, prized for its firm, bright white flesh with a clean, mild flavor. Both eyes migrate to one side of the body during larval development, a hallmark adaptation of the flatfishes. Details of habitat and range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature beyond its known North Pacific distribution.
