Alalaua

The Alalaua is a saltwater fish belonging to the family Priacanthidae, commonly known as bigeyes or catalufas. Described scientifically as <em>Priacanthus alalaua</em>, this species reaches a maximum recorded length of approximately 26 cm. It inhabits coral reef environments, where it is typically found at depths ranging from 9 to 275 metres, spanning shallow reef flats down to the upper mesophotic zone. Priacanthids are named for their conspicuously large eyes, an adaptation to the low-light conditions of deeper reef habitats and nocturnal activity. <em>Priacanthus alalaua</em> is a carnivorous species that feeds primarily on small fish, crustaceans, cephalopods, and zooplankton encountered during nocturnal foraging excursions. Its wide depth range suggests behavioral flexibility, with individuals possibly migrating vertically between shallow and deeper reef zones. The species is found in the saltwater environments of the central Pacific Ocean, where coral reef ecosystems support high biodiversity. Like other priacanthids, it typically displays reddish body coloration, which provides camouflage in the red-light-absorbing conditions of deeper water. Details of geographic range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature beyond its documented occurrence in Hawaiian and central Pacific reef systems.
