परिचय
The Alabama darter, Etheostoma ramseyi, is a small freshwater fish of the family Percidae — the perches — endemic to a restricted range of river drainages in Alabama, USA. Like other members of the large genus Etheostoma, the Alabama darter is a benthic species strongly associated with riffle habitats in clear, shallow streams with gravel, cobble, and sand substrate. Darters do not possess a swim bladder and consequently maintain a demersal lifestyle, using their pectoral fins to rest and reposition on the streambed rather than swimming in the water column. Etheostoma ramseyi feeds primarily on small aquatic invertebrates, including chironomid midge larvae, mayfly nymphs, and other macroinvertebrates gleaned from the substrate surface. During the spring breeding season, males typically display vibrant breeding coloration, which plays a role in intraspecific competition and mate selection. The Alabama darter is considered a stream specialist, and populations are consequently sensitive to sedimentation, channel modification, and water quality degradation. No maximum length data are available for Etheostoma ramseyi in the current scientific literature, though most darters in the genus are small fishes typically measuring less than 10 cm. Details of habitat and range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature. Conservation status has not been formally evaluated under IUCN criteria.
