## Species Guide
Panfish include bluegill, crappie, perch, and pumpkinseed — small but delicious fish found in ponds and lakes across North America. Crappie come in two species: black crappie (prefer clear water) and white crappie (tolerate murky conditions).
## Gear and Tactics
Ultralight spinning gear (2-4 lb line) makes panfishing exciting. Small jigs (1/32 to 1/8 oz) tipped with live bait are the most effective presentations. Tiny crankbaits and micro soft plastics work well too.
## Seasonal Location
Spring: panfish move into shallow water to spawn — look for beds in 1-2m of water over sandy or gravel bottoms. Summer: they suspend around structure and shade. Fall: follow baitfish to deeper structure. Winter: excellent ice fishing targets, holding near the bottom of deeper basins.
