A large, robust sergeant damselfish (up to 20cm) from the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. Deep-bodied with 5 dark bars; inhabits rocky reefs and coral zones at 1-15m. Feeds on algae, invertebrates, and plankton.

Coloration
Dark olive-gray to brownish body with 5 diffuse dark bars, less contrasting than in many congeners; a robust large damselfish; distinctive deeply forked tail with pointed lobes; fins dusky to dark gray.

Western Atlantic from Florida and the Bahamas through the Caribbean Sea to Venezuela and Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico coastlines. Common on exposed rocky shorelines, wave-battered reefs, and seawall structures in turbulent water.
